MTB Hakuba
Hakuba is one of the most famous locations for winter sports in Asia. Made famous through the 1998 Winter Olympics, the region has some top quality snow and facilities. However, where there is good snow there is usually good cycling and Hakuba is no different. From April through to November, the ‘green’ season has some of the most stunning cycling roads in Japan, all within the backdrop of the western alps. Alpine lakes nestled between pristine green rice fields and peaceful, quiet mountain roads make it a must destination. RideJapan has been coming to Hakuba for over 10 years and we still find new and interesting roads as well as love showing our riders our favorites.
WIth regard the MTB, the Land of the Rising Sun has been getting more and more attention lately—and for good reason. Japan is home to some amazing trails and a growing international riding scene. From bike parks to youth involvement, there’s a lot of untapped potential on the islands and it seems like the local riding community is just getting started.
Chombo is a brief overview of what Japan currently has on tap, and takes us through antique Japanese culture to modern and high tech Toyko, with plenty of riding in between.

Arrive Hakuba + Lakes Loop (30-40km)
Welcome to Hakuba. After being collected from the station (Hakuba or Kamashiro) you will be transferred to your accommodation where your bikes will be ready and waiting. Our local host will make any final adjustments and you should be ready to head out for an afternoon ride.
The lakes loop offers a great to way get familiar with the bikes and the area and there is plenty of stunning views on this relatively flat course.
Dinner recommendations are provided
Miasa & Ikeda Loop (65-90km)
This loop is a personal favorite of ours and showcases what Hakuba cycling is all about; small villages, quiet roads, stunning views, and the odd climb here and there.Â
Lookout Loop + Depart (40km)
Heading early up the stunning 407 brings you one of the most amazing views of the western alps. With the sun low and the cloud cover thin, the sheer enormity of the mountains can be appreciated. Early in the year, the snow still perched makes for a stunning photo. An easy roll down the hill before checkout and transfers to the station.

More about this tour
Hakuba can be reached relatively easily not only from Tokyo, but also from the Nagoya and Kansai regions. While it is possible to do a day trip from Tokyo, Hakuba is best enjoyed overnight. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, there are hot springs (onsen) available around town.
